60mm Light Mortar
Light Infantry Support Weapon
The 60mm Light Mortar is a smooth-bore, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon used by most military forces across the Inner Sphere, and has its origins in the 1940s Terran world conflicts.
The typical 60mm Light Mortar was developed from the heavier 81mm Heavy Mortar to provide a lighter-weight alternative to company-level fire support. Normally deployed by the weapons platoon of an infantry company, the Light Mortar is of the usual mortar pattern, consisting of a smooth-bore metal tube on a rectangular or circular base-plate, and supported by a simple bipod with the elevation and traverse mechanisms. The firing pin is fixed in the base cap of the tube, and the bomb is fired automatically when dropped down the barrel. Its fixed-firing pin design allows a high rate of fire by trained crews, with nearly 18 rounds per minute, though it cannot be sustained over long periods of time without cooling the barrel.

Mortars are a smooth-bore, indirect-fire weapons prized for their simplicity and ease of use and manufacture. They have longer ranges than grenade launchers and fire heavier munitions, but usually require a crew, where most grenade launchers require only a single operator. Still, mortars remain popular as a cheap alternative (or supplement) to artillery.
During the late 2920s, the Sangrian Army Command began examining mortars as a light infantry support weapon. The military eventually settled on a 60mm design, and developed a standardized version, known as the “M60” and began producing the weapon. Testing took place through the 2930s, and the first order for 150 was placed to Indumil on Jnauary 15th, 2940. The weapon has been used throughout Sangria’s numerous conflicts ever since. The Federative Republic of San Marcos also produce a version, called the Type 31.
Indumil Mortar Rounds
Originally licensed for production through the Santa Boyaca Factory in The District of Antiquia, Sangria, the production line has continued in production since 2940, despite constant materiel shortages and disruptions due to war or raids, producing and exporting thousands over last century. The factory also produces its own munitions, including (AP) anti-personnel and (HE) high explosive rounds.
