Campaign of the Month: June 2014
Battletech : The Farscape Campaign
12th (Foot) Rifle Infantry Battalion - "The Krakens"
Training Reserve Garrison Battalion
12th (Foot) Rifle Infantry Battalion “The Krakens” – Infantry Battalion / Regular / Reliable
Formed in February 15th, 3023, the Krakens were seen as a reserve militia force to be raised and trained for the defense of The District of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina. Once consisting mostly of raw recruits and retired veterans, it has become a hardened unit forged under years of constant training routines and the reminder of the street-fighting that marked the Small War.
Officers : There are no noteworthy officers that have appeared as yet.
Tactics : A purely defensive force, intended to act in defense of the strategically important San Andrés Island and its airfield, the unit is well-equipped at the individual soldier level, but looking to import heavy anti-aircraft and anti-armor weapons. While they are not yet fully formed, the unit has developed a basic working status as a combined force. They continue to train and work at establishing key defensive points across the island, something most have become intimately familiar with.
Support : The Krakens are essentially a militia reserve force, and as such, have little in the way of technical support at this time. They depend heavily upon the technical expertise of the mercenaries training them. In late-3024, after the combined Governor’s Council agreed to fund the improvement of this force, a recruitment effort across the new nation resulted in various support staff and troopers being shipped to help flesh-out this unit. In the national holo-network, they are seen as the brightest and best, having stood against everything that The Tragnar Confederation could throw at them, and they came out alive and stronger.
Troopers are armed with Iron Dingoes Infantry Field Kit (3023)s supplied by their trainers, chief of which is its wonderful combat armor and the traditional Sangrian-built HG-762 “Holy Grail” Assault Rifle. The unit has been assigned a few SPM-18A3 “Backblast” Recoilless Rifles as heavy support weapons, captured from the Tragnar Marine Battalion, following their defense of the islands. They are also considered a “foot” unit, having only a handful of second-hand transport vehicles assigned to them, mostly because of the size of the islands. It is an increasingly hot-topic in army command to find and issue them some form of air-mobile capabilities, likely a fleet of twelve to thirty-six Pegasus Utility Helicopters.

On September 1st, 3024, the international airport in The District of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina came under attack first by a scouting mercenary force, and then the marine battalion from The Tragnar Confederation, but they were unable to seize the airfield, and retreated. Though the unit took casualties, the troops of the 12th acquitted themselves well, and proved their worth. Expansion of the unit to full battalion status became an immediate military priority, with the unit promised to receive its recruits from across Sangria. The unit also deployed the pair of SPM-18A3 “Backblast” Recoilless Rifles they had captured from the Tragnar Marine Battalion at this time.
During talks over the following week, the combined governors of The New Republic of Sangria agreed to make the improvement of this unit to full battalion status a priority, recruiting actively across the new nation, and funding the training contract for an additional two years, to ensure the unit got the proper education it needed. The governors made a concerted effort to scour existing military units for capable officers in need of promotion, and conducted a small recruitment drive to send troopers across the new nation to improve the unit’s numbers.
Combined with their experience in defense of the airfield, the unit was able to consider itself roughly one-half strength, as of the end of 3024. It also had a viable base for its administration and logistical components. By the end of 3025, it was two-thirds complete, and fairly capable of handling itself in its native terrain.
