8th (Motorized) Rifle Infantry Battalion - "Sultry Demons"

8th (Motorized) Rifle Infantry Battalion – Regular/Reliable The “Sultry Demons”.

A regular infantry battalion from the army of The New Republic of Sangria, the 8th Infantry Battalion or the “Sultry Demons” has served in The District of Guaviare for nearly a century. The core formal military unit of the district, they are well-supplied, and fairly loyal to their assigned district, with their headquarters in San Jose, though they also keep a company each in Florencia and in a small fort on the northern border (Fort Serenity) along the Miranda Plains.

Officers : The 8th Battalion is under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Bandara Laredo, formerly commander of the 3rd (Mountain) Rifle Infantry Battalion “Blue Caps”. A veteran infantry commander, he was promoted and transferred to command of the unit soon after the 3rd Battalion came under Sangrian Army Command in mid-3025. His experience in counter-insurgency operations was deemed a valuable opportunity to give some practical experience and training in mountain fighting to the unit.

Tactics : The 8th Battalion is essentially a typical rifle infantry force, given charge over patrolling the western and northern borders of the district, which has become an important issue with the constant criminals and refugees coming in from the Capital District. The unit keeps themselves mobile, and their heavy weapons are kept in their garrison unless they are expecting trouble.

Support : The 8th Battalion has been equipped with a collection of HG-762 “Holy Grail” Assault Rifles originally supplied by the Sangrian Military, and each soldier is also equipped with a set of surplus Taurian Concordat uniforms, boots, belt and canteen. In addition, most have acquired basic backpacks, and often sport various private small arms, knives and machetes. They traditionally only possess armor, helmets and other gear if it was privately acquired by their families, or if they take it off an opponent in combat. Each platoon has a flame-gun support squad in every platoon, especially important in the thick jungles of the interior.
For technical support, the 8th Battalion has a number of techs assigned to a central “Logistics” pool for their maintenance requirements, which also includes several paramedics squads. Administration remains sufficient at this time, due mostly to efforts in constant and careful recruitment, and in establishing a core of experienced command officers for the organization of the troops.

The infantry units employs a sufficient number of Light Utility Transports to keep them “mobile” or motorized, and to haul each platoon’s MP-75mm Anti-Tank Guns. The unit has also been supplied with sufficient Wheeled APCs of fairly standard design, to equip two (2) companies as “Mechanized”, and provide protection to its command group. Several Jeeps are also scattered throughout the unit for use as command vehicles by its officers. The formerly attached helicopters of this unit now operate under the aegis of the Sangrian Air Command.

The unit lacks an integral artillery component, but also has numerous SPM-18A3 “Backblast” Recoilless Rifles held at the platoon level for close-in support.

The 8th Infantry Battalion is a regular armed forces unit of the Republic of Sangria. Formed in 2860 with the nation’s independence, the 8th quickly gained a loyalty to the local district, and have remained in the region ever since.

During operations in support of its home district in late-3024, the unit came into contact with well-equipped partisans striking across the border with The District of Cundinamarca. Mostly using the mountains as their shield, these forces initially did damage to the unit’s patrols, particularly the 28th Company.

Overall the unit was able to remain intact, mostly with support from local air strike formations from Sangrian Air Command, particularly its Dragonfly (A-37) Light Attack Aircraft operating out of San José in an infantry support role, and equipped with incendiary bombs. The encounter was a valuable training exercise if nothing else, and the unit was able to quickly replace its losses with local recruits.

Throughout late-3025, the unit was joined on sorties by The Urban Blight, who provided valuable firepower in the jungles and foothills along the north-western border. Their actions gave the unit some experience in working closely with Mechs, but also gave a hard smack to the noses of the local bandits.
