The Tragnar Confederation

Description:

Officially the Tragnar Republic (Spanish: República Tragnara) also known as the “Tragnar Confederation”, is a federal republic located in central Terramatrix. Occupying the entire Horn of Tragnar, it is bordered by the Drake Passage to the south, and both the Comstar Enclave to the west and the Free-City of Peregrine to the east, across the Sea of Tragnar. Tragnar is the largest country in the world, and claims sovereignty over part of the southern pole region, the Islas Malvinas, and South Selvanos Isles. It also has several distinct nation-states within its borders, that claim some degree of independence, but are absolutely under the control of the central state government of Tragnar.

Tragnar_Geography.jpg

Geography

The mainland regions of Tragnar place it uniquely on one of the few large “fresh water” seas on Terramatrix, allowing an ease of water treatment that helps supporting agriculture.

Tragnar’s highest point is Mount Aconcagua in the Mendoza province (6,959 m above sea level), also the highest point in the Southern and Central Hemispheres. The lowest point is Laguna del Carbón in the San Julián Great Depression, Santa Cruz province (−105 m below sea level, also the lowest point in the Southern and Central Hemispheres, and the seventh lowest point on Terramatrix).

Some of the major rivers are the Rio Paraná and the Rio Tragnar, which join to form the Río de la Plata. These rivers are discharged into the Tragnar Sea, a shallow “fresh water” sea. Its waters are influenced by two major ocean currents: the warm Tragnar Current circulates around the sea, raising local temperatures greatly, particularly over its island holdings.

Economy

Benefiting from rich natural resources, a highly literate population, a diversified industrial base, and an export-oriented agricultural sector, the economy of Tragnar is System – Dumassas’ third-largest.

One of the world’s top developing nations, Tragnar has had a historically uneven economic performance, with high economic growth alternating with severe recessions, income maldistribution and—in the recent decades—increasing poverty. Although managing to keep a place among the planet’s top economies, it recently suffered a long and steady decline and now is just an upper middle-income country. High inflation—a weakness of the Tragnar economy for decades—has become a trouble once again, with rates in 3021 between the official 10.2% and the privately estimated 25%, causing heated public debate over manipulated statistics. Income distribution, having improved since 3010, is classified as “medium”, still considerably unequal. While the country has settled most of its debts, it faces a technical debt crisis since the 31st of July, 3022. A ComStar judge blocked Tragnar’s payments to 93% of its national bonds unless it pays to “Vulture funds” the full value of the defaulted bonds they bought after its 3009 default. Tragnar vowed to capitulate to what its considered ransom tactics of the funds.

Industry

In 3020 manufacturing accounted for 20.3% of GDP—the largest goods-producing sector in the nation’s economy. Well-integrated into Tragnar agriculture, half of the industrial exports have rural origins. The diversified manufacturing sector is organized around a steadily growing network of industrial parks.

In 3020 the leading sectors by volume were: food processing, beverages and tobacco products; motor vehicles and auto parts; textiles and leather; refinery products and biodiesel; chemicals and pharmaceuticals; steel, aluminum and iron; industrial and farm machinery; home appliances and furniture; plastics and tires; glass and cement; and recording and print media. In addition, Tragnar has since long been one of the top wine-producing countries in the world. However, it has also been classified as one of the worst countries where instances of child labor and forced labor have been observed and mentioned in a 3022 media report. Tragnar’s agricultural sector relies heavily on such practices.

Córdoba is Tragnar’s major industrial center, hosting metalworking, motor vehicle and auto parts manufactures. Next in importance are the Greater Aires area (food processing, metallurgy, motor vehicles and auto parts, chemicals and petrochemicals, consumer durables, textiles and printing); Rosario (food processing, metallurgy, farm machinery, oil refining, chemicals, and tanning); San Miguel de Tucumán (sugar refining); San Lorenzo (chemicals and pharmaceuticals); San Nicolás de los Arroyos (steel milling and metallurgy); and Ushuaia and Bahía Blanca (oil refining). Other manufacturing enterprises are located in the provinces of Santa Fe (zinc and copper smelting, and flour milling); Mendoza and Neuquén (wineries and fruit processing); Chaco (textiles and sawmills); and Santa Cruz and Salta (oil refining).

The electric output of Tragnar in 3017 totaled over 12 TWh (44 PJ), of which about 37% was consumed by industrial activities.

Military Forces

Coat_of_arms_of_Tragnar.svg.png

Tragnar National Army : The armed forces of Tragnar are geographically grouped into three Army Regiments (Divisiones de Ejército). Each has responsibility over a specific region of the country. 1st Army Regiment covers the northeast, 2nd Army Regiment covers the center and northwest of Tragnar, and 3rd Army Regiment covers the south and Patagonia. In addition, 4th Army Regiment is a rapid deployment force (Fuerza de Despliegue Rápido, FDR), and the 5th Army Regiment operates independently as the occupational command of Aires, the Capital District. There are also several separate groups, including the anti-aircraft group and the Tragnar Army Aviation group.

Each Battalion consists of two to five Cavalry or Infantry Companies, one or two Artillery Groups, a Scout Cavalry Platoon, an Engineering Platoon, an Intelligence Platoon, a Communications Platoon, a Command Platoon and a Company-sized Logistical Support Group.

The 4th Paratrooper Battalion is considered the FDR, and is deployed in garrison positions in the Captial. This battalion also has control over the “Special Operations Group”, consisting of two Commando Platoons, one Special Forces Platoon and a Psychological Operations Platoon. This unit is also deployed with the Tragnar Army Aviation Group.

1st & 2nd Armored Battalions (Armored Cavalry)
4th Paratrooper Battalion (Air Assault)
5th, 6th and 8th Mountain Battalions (Mountain Cazadores)
9th, 10th and 11th Mechanized Battalions (Mechanized)
12th Jungle Battalion (Jungle Cazadores)

Note : 3rd Infantry Battalion was converted into a motorized training formation, dissolved in 3010. The 7th Infantry Battalion was dissolved from battle attrition in 2992. The 4th Paratrooper Battalion took severe losses during the Naval Yard Raid of the 3024-5 “Small War”, and is in a period of rebuilding.

The two Armor Battalions deploy with Scorpion Light Tanks, while the three Mechanized Battalions deploy with standard Tracked APCs, with only a handful of Wheeled APCs among its command units. The army’s older Galleon Light Tanks have slowly been replaced by Scorpions, but recently the military have been replacing the last few with Goblin Infantry Support Tanks directly from the House Davion asset replacement program. The motorized infantry are equipped with jeeps and hundreds of locally produced Light Utility Transports.

As small arms, Federated Longrifle ARs are widely distributed, though continual importation of the Taurian Concordat AR makes them increasingly the army standard automatic rifle. As support weapons on the platoon level, the RPG-7H Launcher and SPM-18A3 “Backblast” Recoilless Rifle remain the standard, all locally produced and quite common. At the company level, small batteries of three Sniper Field Artillery Pieces are usually attached as artillery support.

Tragnar_Air_Force.png

Tragnar National Air Force : The Tragnar Air Force (Spanish: Fuerza Aérea Tragnar ) consists of three Commands: the Air Operations Command, the Personnel Command and the Materiels Command. The Air Operations Command (Comando de Operaciones Aéreas) is the branch of the Air Force responsible for aerospace defense, air operations, planning, training, technical and logistical support of the air units. Subordinate to the Air Operations Command are the Air Brigades (Brigadas Aéreas), the Air Force’s major operative units. A total of eight Air Brigades are currently operational. Brigades are headquartered at Military Air Bases (Base Aérea Militar (BAMs).

The primary strike plane of the Tragnar Air Force consists of Angel Light Strike Fighters, known as Fighting Hawks to the local military. There are still a few hold-over Dragonfly (A-37) Light Attack Aircrafts used in infantry support missions. The lead elements of the air force, are its six (6) Corsairs deployed as its premier attack force, who lack serious combat experience, but continue their training efforts.

In support services, the air force deploy a surprisingly large number of Karnov UR Transports who act as both cargo and personnel transports. Most are second-hand from their contacts with Von Doom, but they have begun replacing older models with freshly-manufactured vehicles. The air force also fields a fair number of Ferret Light Scout VTOLs as scouts and recon aircraft.

Tragnar National Navy : Although one of the largest naval forces on the planet, the exact composition of the national navy remains in question. Most of its primary ships were destroyed by * “The Iron Dingoes” during their 3024 raid on the naval yards, including two of their destroyers (the “Heroina” and the “Sarandi” ), both of its submarines (the “Salta” and the “San Juan” ), and all of its military support vessels (their primary troop transport “Hercules”, survey vessel “Puerto Deseado”, tanker “Durance”, and two logistics vessels, the “Isla Palma” and “Gorgona” ). Remaining naval ships consist of more than a dozen Silverfin Patrol Cutters, but the navy also keeps several corvettes and at least two (2) destroyers as active military vessels; only two logistics support vessels remain in their fleet. The naval Marine Battalion, the navy’s defensive infantry force, took severe losses during the 3024 raid on The District of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, and is considered on stand-down status for the time being.

Tragnar_Policia.png

Tragnar Policia

The Interior Security System

The Interior Security System is administered by both the federal and subscribing provincial governments. Also often referred to as the Gendarmerie, the ISS serves as the National Border Patrol, Coast guards and provides a position making it the Federales Policia, or Federal Police Force.

Equipped much like their military counter-parts, the Gendarmerie act to thwart internal threats and crime, protecting the nation’s borders and are greatly feared by the general populace for their secret policia. Although spread evenly across the nation, all told they can muster around 2 or three battalions in strength in need. They maintain several corvettes for coast guard duties, and a handful of light transports and jeeps for maintenance of their borders.

History

The earliest recorded human presence in the area now known as Tragnar is dated from the initial Taurian colonizations begun in 2519. Tragnar rose as the successor state of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, a Taurian outer colony founded in 2783. The declaration and fight for independence ( 2817 to 2825 ) was followed by an extended civil war against the Federated Suns that lasted until 2868, which ended with the country’s reorganization as a federation of provinces with Aires as its capital city. From then on – while Inner Sphere immigration waves radically reshaped its cultural and demographic outlook – Tragnar enjoyed an historically almost-unparalleled increase in prosperity : by the early 30th century it already ranked as the wealthiest developed nation in the world. After 2937, however, and despite remaining among the richest countries of Terramatrix until mid-century, it descended into political instability and suffered periodic economic crisis that sank it back into underdevelopment.

The 2833 constitution included the first use of the name “Tragnar Republic” in formal documents, though the name “Tragnar Confederation” was also popular and was formalized in the Tragnar Constitution of 2860. In 2867, a presidential decree declared it officially the “Tragnar Republic”, and that year’s constitutional amendment ruled both names as legally valid. The term “Confederation” is often chosen, as it is unique to the planet and sets Tragnar above other countries.

In mid-3024 a failed bid to capture The District of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, resulted in the destruction of the bulk of its transport and reserve combat fleet, when * “The Iron Dingoes” laid waste to it while still in dock. Joining with The Free-City of Von Doom’s Downport and The Federative Republic of San Marcos under the aegis of The League of Free Nations in an indirect war against the Iron Dingoes, they began what is now called “The Small War”. The fighting culminated in the invasion of Islas Brasilera by a combined invasion force of the Iron Dingoes and The Oriental Republic of San Isabel, where the united military of the League lost many of their air force assets, as well as the islands themselves.

One month into the occupation of the islands, during a high profile meeting of the League’s leadership at Von Doom, the bulk of their military and political leadership were eliminated, throwing most of the League into chaos. Luckily for Tragnar, its hereditary leader, Baron Michael Bovior survived, though he lost his capable military leader, Colonel Francois Quisan in the assassination. While he has been able to hold the majority of his nation together, public protests against the war have forced his hand to scale back any retaliation; something the remaining war leaders do not agree with. Rumors persist that they could forcibly put their own leader into place in the future.
