Overview : Together with the Bonaventure corvette and a system of remote surveillance satellites, the light but heavily armed Vigilant-Class corvette served as the Terran Hegemony’s first line of defense against invasions from neighboring realms. Though both of these naval assets would eventually be phased out in the early 2400s as the newer, faster Vincent-Class came into production, the Vigilant’s mix of firepower kept it in the field for another two centuries among the navies of the various Great Houses.

Capabilities : The Vigilant was designed for reconnaissance and surveillance, and was purposely kept small, and the Vigilant is small – in fact, very small for a combat WarShip. The Vigilant-Class is only slightly more massive than a Merchant-class JumpShip, and bow to stern distance is actually shorter than the height of a Behemoth-class DropShip, or the diameter of a Mammoth-Class DropShip.

Its small engines attained only a maximum 2.5Gs acceleration, barely enough to keep up with WarShips and DropShips during combat. Its greatest deficiency, however, was its relative lack of advanced sensor and computer capabilities, limiting its detection range and accuracy. Combined with its lack of speed and armor, the Vigilant would have been largely regarded as a poor system defense ship were it not for its abundance of raw firepower, easily outgunning that of the Bonaventures. In addition to heavy weaponry, the Vigilant also featured bays for a squadron of AeroFighters and a quartet of small craft, allowing the ship to field its own close support to tie up invading naval forces. Nevertheless, the Vigilant-Class was most commonly deployed in pairs alongside two Bonaventures for advanced detection capabilities and fire support.

Deployment : Though hardly cost effective, the four-ship “buddy system” sufficed until the Capellan invasion of Terra Firma in 2409, which prompted the Hegemony navy to produce the more efficient Vincent-Class corvette. The Vigilants were all eventually mothballed or sold-off to the various Houses as Vincents replaced them. While in the service of these other navies, the ships would see action in Periphery during the Reunification War and later conflicts.

The Federated Suns had at least ten _ Vigilants_ active during the Case AMBER ambush at Tentativa, although the losses to the Federated Suns Navy during that engagement were considerable. The Capellan Confederation kept three Vigilants in service during the Star League era alongside three Vincent-class corvettes, while the Lyran Commonwealth was operating four Vigilants in 2765. The greatest user of the Vigilant at this point in time was the Rim Worlds Republic, however; the Republican navy consisted of more than two hundred and seventy WarShips in April 2765, of which thirty were Vigilants.

None are known to have accompanied the Exodus Fleet.

The handful that survived the fall of the Star League were destroyed in the early Succession Wars, most notably two Vigilants (the DCS Wyrm and the DCS Pacheko ) which were restored from mothballs to active service by the Draconis Combine. Both ships were later destroyed in 2853 in battle over Hesperus II by the indomitable LCS Invincible, during the last WarShip duel of the Succession Wars.
